My Brother the Devil Research #2

My Brother the Devil is a very unknown film produced by Julia Godzinskaya, Gayle Griffiths and Michael Sackler. It was directed and written by Sally El Hosaini who is also known for The Fifth Bowl and Henna Night. Backed up by companies such as Rooks Nest Entertainment, Wild Horses Film Company and Verve Pictures this small time film has been able to put itself out there.

Currently there are only a few places you can see the movie, there is little competition between My Brother the Devil and the other films, Rust and Bone and The Sapphires.

The Film has had 5 award winnings and 4 nominations already since being made this year.
The film was created with an incredibly low budget which makes it success even greater with many positive reviews explaining how strong the story was.

"This really is an outstanding film, with beautifully crafted visuals, strong script, and excellent cast performances led by James Floyd and Fady Elsayed. A worthy winner of the Best Cinematography prize at Sundance 2012 where I saw the premiere screening.

It deals in a real and sensitive manner with some fascinating personal issues, and without giving any of the story away it keeps the watcher engaged to the very end.

The film stays loyal to its subject matter, employing a script based on the street lingo of its London estate setting. While this takes a few minutes to adapt to, it allowed me to became immersed in the real interactions, emotions, and events of the film.

A fantastic debut from talented director Sally El Hosaini, this is one to watch when it is released in the UK." - Review from Joshua Phillips (UK)

There was little technology used within the filming to give it a run down look, especially seeming as it was set in the present representation of Hackney.

There is a limited amount of places to see this film because its not a massive blockbuster movie, it's a small new film which hasn't had much promotion in the media.

Production

Stages involved in producing a film

- Film/Concept
An idea or principle beleif you can use the focus of your script which is built upon to tell a story.

-Writing the script
Details the story, setting, dialogue. This usually involves a team of writers

-Drawing up storyboards for the film
A sequence of rough sketches done by an illustrator to show changes in action or a change in plot in a scene.
Storyboard is used to communicate the vision of the film to a crew who will be working under sirection; This can save alot of communication problems when it comes to filming.

-Funding
Once everything is finished, the script and storyboard are usually sent off to certain companies to get financing for the film. This allows for professional equiptment or people.

-Cast & Crew
Casting directors are hired to get the right actors

-Scouting for locations
Most prodction companies have studios which are specifically designed/set-up for certain locations (i.e- school/classroom). They also have green screens.

-Organsing a schedule
This is to accompany the shooting script. It gives control over the day to day shooting of the film, you can give each shot a set time while looking at the storyboard & shooting scripts.
It's neeed because the cast crew need to be organised to make sure the right people are avaliable.

-Filming equiptment
this is where funding is needed most, lighting, cameras etc can be very expensive for a HQ film.

Distribution

The studio makes a licensing agreement with a distribuion company
The distribution company shows the movie (screening) to buyers representing theatres.
The buyers and distributiion company negotiate lease terms.
The prints are sent to the rheatres a few days before opening day

-Engagement
The theatre shows the movie for a length of time.
At the end of the engagement the theatre sends the prints back to the distribution company and makes payment of lease agreement

The Skyfall Marketing team are working closely with companies to produce advertising campaigns such as this. As we can see from the poster, Skyfall is in association with Coca Cola and Sony Xperia Smartphones. This also almost creates a type of merchandising for the film as well.

Skyfall Research: Social Networking - part 2

There are many Gifs and pictures of the Skyfall film currently circulating Tumblr, along with many captions such as "I recommend going to see Skyfall" and "Amazing film!"

Skyfall Research: Social Networks

There are currently five Facebook pages devoted to the new Skyfall Bond film. This was brought to my attention after a few of my friends 'liked' the various pages. This shows that marketing via social networking sites also serves as a form of word-of-mouth.
